Established in May 1993, the Combat Service Identification Badge (CSIB) for Army Personnel in DoD and Joint Activities is worn on the wearer’s right side of the Army Service, Mess, and Evening Mess uniforms, taking the place of the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia-Former Wartime Service (SSI-FWTS) patch (SSI-FWTS is now SSI-MOHC for Shoulder Sleeve Insignia-Military Operations in Hostile Conditions).
Only one CSIB may be worn at a time, and other badges may be moved from the right to the left so that the CSIB may stand alone. The only right-side badge with higher precedence than the CSIB is the Presidential Service Identification Badge.
The Army Personnel in DoD and Joint Activities CSIB is a pin-on badge with a blue background in the shade associated with Department of Defense insignias and seals. In the center is the Coat of Arms of the United States, an emblem that has historically been associated the United States Army. “Supporting Defense,” the motto of Soldiers assigned to joint or DoD activities, is found on the Distinctive Unit Insignia (unit crest) authorized for their wear.
