A rayed disc symbolizing the sun as well as the optimism for Iraq’s reconstruction and the establishment of a democratic society forms the backdrop for the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the U.S. Army Element, Multi-National Force Iraq, first approved on 7 January 2005 and later amended twice (18 February and 24 February 2005) to change the description and symbolism
Resting on the rayed disc is a seven-pointed star that embodies a vision of unity for the seven people groups in Iraq (Armenian, Assyrian, Kurd, Shia, Suni, Turkoman, and Yazidi) that will lead to a more prosperous and secure future for these Iraqis. A pair of crossed scimitars commemorates the partnership between Iraqi Security Forces and the Multi-National Forces that is necessary for the Iraqi people to enjoy a democratic way of life. Atop all these images is a statue of a human-headed, winged Mesopotamian bull (lamassu) that evokes Iraq’s rich heritage and reinforces the importance of strength and protection for the people of the nation of Iraq.
