U.S. ARMY ELEMENT, U.S. SPECIAL OPERATIONS COMMAND UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The United States Special Operation Command (USSOCOM) is one of four Unified Combatant Commands based upon function rather than geographical area of responsibility. Established in April 1987, USSOCOM is headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida and is organized along the same lines as any major military command, with a Commander, Deputy and Vice Commanders, and a Senior Enlisted Advisor (E-9) providing a conduit for enlisted personnel to voice concerns to USSOCOM officials.

Out of USSOCOM’s total of roughly 70,000 personnel, about 2,500 serve on staff at headquarters. Of the four DoD branches represented, the United States Army Special Operation Command comprises about 47 percent of USSCOM personnel, with the Air Force coming in second with 28 percent, the Navy third with 14 percent, and the Marines at just over 4 percent. The small number of Marine Corps Special Operations personnel may be attributable to the fact that the branch’s Special Operations Corps, MARSOC, was not established until 200
6.
