Service Stripes and Overseas Service Bars were authorized for wear by active members of the Army, Army Reserve, and Army National Guard wearing the Class A Army Green uniform until the Army phased it out in 2015. Consisting of a goldenlite rayon bar on a green background that formed a 3/32” border around the bar, the Overseas Service Bars came in different sizes for Male and Female personnel and were awarded for six months of active Federal service outside the Continental U.S. during specific periods of wartime or overseas contingency operations. Although not awarded to personnel who served a fraction of a six-month period, regulations permitted servicemembers to combine periods of service less than six months in different operations to equal a six-month period and thus earn an overseas service bar.
On the Class A Army Green uniform, Overseas Service Bars are worn centered on the right sleeve of the Army green uniform coat, with the bottom edge of the bar placed a quarter-inch above the sleeve braid of the coat for officers and 4 inches above and parallel to the bottom of the sleeve for enlisted servicemembers. Additional bars are placed 1/16 of an inch above and parallel to the first bar.
Similarly, Service Stripes for the Class A Army Green uniform were also issued in Male and Female sizes, with the Male version featuring a 3/16” goldenlite rayon stripe and the Female 5/32” in width; the Male Service Stripes are 1 and 5/16” in length and the version for Female personnel is 1 and ¼” long. Male stripes feature a 3/32” inch green border while Female stripes have a 5/64” border.
A Service Stripe is worn by enlisted personnel in the Army, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard who complete three years of honorable, active Federal service in one of the five branches of the Armed Forces of the United States or for those on Active Reserve whose service time in a
Reserve Component of the Armed Forces (including the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps)
is creditable toward retirement.
Service Stripes are centered on the outside bottom half of the left sleeve of the Army Green uniform coat, placed four inches from the bottom of the sleeve at a 45-degree angle, with the lower end facing toward the sleeve’s inside seam. Additional Service Stripes are added 1/16” above and parallel to the first (or subsequent) Service Stripe.
