The Master Gunner Identification Badge was approved for wear on 31 January 2019. It is awarded to Soldiers who have successfully completed Additional Skill Identifier-producing course that provides the Soldier with a high level of technical competence and a thorough knowledge of a projectile-producing system that assists a command in resourcing, planning, training, and carrying out a gunnery program that enhances the combat efficacy and lethality of a maneuver force. Courses are available for Field Artillery, M1/M1A1 Abrams, Infantry Fighting Vehicle, Avenger, M1A2 Abrams System Enhancement Package, Stryker, Patriot, and Aviation.
Retroactive requests are permitted for both current Soldiers as well as veterans and retirees. Requests for current members are submitted through the Commandant of the corresponding school, while veterans and retirees submit requests to either the Commander, U.S. Army Human Resources Command, Awards and Decorations Branch (if separated or released from active duty after October 2002) or the National Personnel Records Center (separated after 1965 up to October 2002).
The badge features an upturned tab at its base with the inscription “Master Gunner” below the branch insignia of the specific areas of expertise: A missile for Air Defense Artillery, a Saber for Armor/Cavalry, an M1 Rifle for Infantry, and a cannon for Field Artillery. Encircling the insignia are wreaths of oak leaves; oak is the symbol of strength and perseverance and the wreaths are the embodiment of honor and achievement. The tab is upturned to denote the support, technical expertise, and advice that Master Gunners can provide their Commanders.
Available in full and miniature size, the Master Gunner ID Badge (MGIB) is authorized for wear with the ACU, OCP, ASU, and Dress Uniforms. According to a September 2019 memo on the design and development of the MGIB, it is worn on the wearer’s left side, presumably following the guidelines for other Skill badges authorized for wear on those uniforms.
