U.S. ARMY NATIONAL TRAINING CENTER UNIT CREST (DUI)

The colors blue, yellow, and red that make up the shield portion of the U.S. Army National Training Center Distinctive Unit Insignia (also known as a DUI or unit crest) are the branch colors of the Infantry, Armor, and Artillery and recall the Armor training that used to be conducted at Fort Irwin before World War II and during the build-up of the Vietnam era. Additionally, the colors symbolize the Combined Arms Training Mission of the U.S. Army’s National Training Center.

“Lead Train Win,” motto of the National Training Center, encapsulates the installation’s core mission and emphasizes the importance of leadership in ensuring that the training of each generation of Soldiers builds upon the successful methods employed in the past. The insignia was approved on 19 March 1981.

Also known as unit crests, Distinctive Unit Insignias (DUIs) are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however. Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Part of the United States Army Forces Command, the Fort Irwin National Training Center is a major training site selected for its remote location and the fact that it had previously served well as a training location when it was home to the Armored Combat Training Area in the early 1950s. Officially activated on 16 October 1980, the Center today is home to the Fort Irwin garrison and the units that lead training at the Center. These include the 11th Armored Cavalry (which serves as the opposing forces, or OPFOR, in training exercises), the 916th Support Brigade, NTC Operations Group, the Joint Enterprise Center, Joint Center of Excellence, Mission & Installation Contracting Command, Reserve Component Operations Plans and Training, and a Special Forces Recruiting command.
