The United States Army’s Soldier for Life initiative, designed to highlight the four landmarks of a career in the U.S. Army (Enlistment, Assignment, Preparation to retire, and Engagement after retirement), was originally introduced in 2012.
To help promote the new program and its lifelong perspective on Army service and post-service benefits, the Army introduced a new Retired Service Identification Badge (RSIB) to be worn on the Army Service/Dress Uniform in 2015. It did not, however, discontinue the existing RSIB so that retired Servicemembers could choose a badge reflective of their time in service.
The Retired Soldier for Life Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, more commonly referred to as a shoulder patch or unit patch, is worn on the left sleeve of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU); they may also wear the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia – Former Wartime Service (SSI-FWTS, now designated as SSI-MOHC) on the right sleeve if it was authorized while they were on active duty.
