Commonly referred to as a unit patch or shoulder patch, the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia of U.S. Army Element, Special Operations Command South (SOCOUTH) was approved for wear on 31 May 1995. In addition to the Airborne tab, which is considered a part of the patch, a parachute signifies the unit’s Airborne status and its use as a primary force delivery method. Three horizontally oriented lightning bolts denote the unit’s ability to rapidly deploy forces via air, land, and sea.
An upright dagger or stiletto, a replica of the weapon issued to the 1st Special Service Force in World War II, links this organization to its U.S. Army Special Operations forebears. A pair of spread wings denotes the rotary wing Aviation component of the Army, while the trident symbolizes the Special Forces’ surface, sub-surface, and small-boat operations.
Use the Selection boxes to choose either a colored patch for wear on the AGSU coat or a monochrome patch for wear with a combat or utility uniform. Be sure to select the monochrome type, either UCP or OCP, that matches your Army Combat Uniform’s camo pattern.
