More commonly referred to as a unit patch or shoulder patch, the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI) of the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC) was approved for wear on 16 November 2000. Its medium-blue field is the color historically used in the heraldry and insignia of Department of Defense organization.
Although the Western Hemisphere technically includes The continents of North and South American comprise at least part of six continents and four oceans, the insignia displays only the continents of North and South America to reflect the location of the countries who participate in WHINSEC.
In the upper right corner is a Maltese cross , the insignia flown by Christopher Columbus; it is adapted from the insignia WHINSEC’s predecessor, the U.S. Army School of the Americas.
