Embroidered on serge blue fabric, our combination sleeve device for Criminal Investigator (CI) Chief Warrant Officers takes the guesswork out of centering and distancing the CI specialty mark in relation to the gold Coast Guard shield. All that’s left for you to do is place the sleeve device on the outside of a sleeve so the bottom of the shield is 1/4-inch from the top of the CWO rank stripes, then position it so the shield is centered horizontally on the outside of the sleeve.
While Chief Warrant Officers wear the gold Coast Guard shield on the sleeves of the Dinner Dress Blue Jacket of the eponymous uniform and the Formal Dress uniform, they do not wear their CWO specialty mark on them; these are worn on the sleeves of only the Service Dress Blue coat. This restriction, as well as the prohibition of CWO sleeve devices on the Dinner Dress White Jacket, was first introduced into the Coast Guard Uniform Regulations in 2003 with the release of COMDTINST M1020.6E. It was the first uniform manual released after the Coast Guard was transferred from the Department of Transportation to the Department of Homeland Security with George W. Bush’s signing of the Homeland Security Act in November 2002.
