The Male Officer Dinner Dress White Jacket Uniform (DDWJ) is the warm-weather counter-part of the Dinner Dress Blue Jacket Uniform and is highly similar in appearance, with an Evening Jacket featuring narrow, semi-peaked lapels and a 3/4-inch chain-link closure with two 28-ligne gold Coast Guard buttons and a pair of 35-ligne gold Coast Guard buttons down each front panel. It’s worn to the same events and functions as the DDBJ—official evening functions that are classified as black-tie events and other formals events (weddings and receptions, theatrical or operatic productions, formal dances, etc.).
While Officers in the grade of O-3 (Lieutenant) and below are permitted to wear the Dinner Dress White Uniform at events at which higher-ranked Officers are required to wear the DDWJ, owning one should be considered essential for Junior Officers who are serious about making the Coast Guard their career. Indeed, the optics of a Junior Officers being “outdressed” by enlisted Coast Guard personnel—namely Gold Badge Commander Master Chiefs, who are required to purchase the DDWJ along with the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard—are not what you’d call “optimal.”
