Authorized for wear on the coat sleeves of the Full Dress Blue (FDB), Dinner Dress Blue (DDB), and Service Dress Blue (SDB) “Alpha” uniforms, our embroidered sleeve device for Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officers in the Diving (DIV) specialty features the gold Coast Guard shield and the DIV specialty mark centered 1/4-inch above it. Featuring gold embroidery on blue serge fabric, this device is worn on both sleeves with the shield and DIV marks horizontally centered on the outside of the sleeve, and the bottom of the shield 1/4-inch above the CWO rank stripe.
Diving is the most recent addition to the Coast Guard’s lineup of Chief Warrant Officer specialties; it was created in 2014 following a 17-month study by the Diver Career Management Working Group that analyzed safety issues, mission and duty requirements, and the impact the new specialty would have on workforce management. The ultimate impetus for its creation, however, was undoubtedly the 2006 diving accident involving the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter
Healy in which two Guardsmen, Lt. Jessica Hill and Petty Officer 2nd Class Stephen Duque, died during a poorly supervised training dive in the Arctic Ocean.
