Worn in “Alpha” and “Bravo” configurations, the Coast Guard Service Dress Blue Uniform for Female Officers is the workhorse of the six dress uniforms that Coast Guard regulations call for all Officers to own and maintain. Both uniforms are worn year-round, with the Alpha variation prescribed for functions and occasions that call for more formality than offered by the Bravo version, but not so formal as to require a Full Dress, Dinner Dress, or Dinner Dress Blue/White Jacket Uniform.
The differences between the two include shirt styles (Alpha has a white long-sleeve, Bravo authorizes blue long- or short-sleeve), hard shoulder boards for Bravo uniforms (Alpha has none), and the authorization of a Garrison Cap for wear with the Bravo uniform. Though the single-breasted coat with notched lapels and four front pockets was clearly inspired by the Navy’s Female Officer Service Dress Blue Uniform, the Coast Guard uniform Coat has only three gold Csxoast Guard buttons as opposed to the four found on its Navy counterpart.
While Service Dress Slacks and Skirts are considered equivalent items that may be worn interchangeably, there are caveats that limit when Skirts may be worn: Slacks are prescribed when Females are part of military formations that may be required to stand in place for long periods of time, as well as when swords are worn. Skirts are also not normally worn on military ships, cutters, boats, aircraft, but they may be authorized for special occasions (see Section 3.C.6. Skirts in the USCG Uniform Regulations for more details.
