The Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) specialty of Marine Safety Specialist Deck (MSSD) was one of several established in response to a study of Coast Guard CWO specialties published in 2004. Originally, its specialty mark consisted of a trident pointed upward and emerging from ocean swells, but in 2015 that mark was assigned to the related specialty Marine Safety Specialist Response. The replacement insignia, with its life preserver and bent stock, was more successful evoking the mission of MSSD Chief Warrant Officers.
Our MSSD sleeve device makes properly configuring sleeve ornamentation a snap by combining the MSSD mark and the Coast Guard shield on a single swatch of fabric with the two devices precisely spaced and centered. Simply place the fabric on a sleeve of the Service Dress Blue coat so the devices are horizontally centered on the outside of the sleeve and the bottom edge of the fabric is parallel to the sleeve cuff, then make sure the bottom of the shield is 1/4-inch from the top of the CWO rank stripe.
The MSSD CWO sleeve device is worn on both sleeves of the Service Dress Blue oat, which is a component of the Full Dress Blue, Dinner Dress Blue (but not Dinner Dress Blue Jacket), and Service Dress Blue “Alpha” uniforms.
