The Marine Safety Specialist Engineering (MSSE) specialty for Chief Warrant Officers (CWOs) was established at the same time (January 2008) as Marine Safety Specialist Deck. Coast Guard ratings that lead to this CWO specialty include Damage Controlman, Electrician’s Mate, and Machinery Technician.
Coast Guard regulations call for Chief Warrant Officers to wear their specialty marks on coat sleeves centered a quarter-inch above the gold Coast Gard shield, with the shield one-quarter inch above the CWO stripe. Our MSSE sleeve devices simplifies the process by combining the gear-and-propeller MSSE specialty mark with gold USCG shield on a single square of blue serge fabric. Simply center the device on the outside of the sleeve of the Service Dress Blue coat with the bottom of the shield 1/4-inch above the CWO rank stripe, sew in place, then repeat on the other sleeve.
While CWO specialty marks are worn only on the sleeves of the Service Dress Blue coat, the coast Guard shield is also worn above the CWO rank stripe on the Dinner Dress Blue Jacket and Formal Dress uniforms. Specialty marks are placed on shoulder boards for wear on white Formal, Dinner, and Service Dress uniforms.
