The Coast Guard’s Chief Warrant Officer specialty of Public Information can trace its origins to the establishment of the Warrant Officer position of Photographer in 1942. With the merger of the Coast Guard’s Journalist and Photographer’s Mate ratings to create Public Affairs Specialists in 1972, a source was created for Public Information Chief Warrant Officer candidates.
For the Public Information (PI) specialty mark, the Guard retained the old Photographer’s insignia of a bellows-style camera, and it’s displayed above a gold Coast Guard shield on both sleeves of the Service Dress Blue coat. Our Public Information Officer sleeve device conveniently combines both these insignias on a single square of blue serge fabric, ensuring the PI mark is located exactly where it should be in relation to the Coast Guard shield.
To properly attach the device, simply place it on the sleeve so the shield is 1/4-inch above the CWO stripe, then center the shield horizontally on the outside half of the sleeve before sewing in place.
