This half-inch wide black chin strap designed for wear on the Chief Petty Officer Combination Cap is manufactured to meet or exceed all Mil-Spec standards. It is attached to the base of the Combo Cap frame with gold cap screws (

Along with the distinct Chief Petty Officer (CPO) cap insignia attached to the black mounting band, the plain black chin strap helps onlookers immediately identify the wearer as a Senior Noncommissioned Officer (E-7 to E-9). Only Commissioned Officers are authorized to wear a gold chin strap on the Combination Cap (O-1 to O-10), with extra types of gold ornamentation added to distinguish varying grades: An O-2 2nd Lieutenant has just the gold chin strap, for example, while a Commander’s Combination Cap will feature the gold chin strap plus a single arc of oak leaves on the left and right sides of the visors.
For Chief Petty Officers, on the other hand, the cap rank insignia is the only sign of difference between a CPO, Senior CPO and Master CPO, with the latter two featuring one and two stars respectively to reflect the numbers of grades above E-7.
