For attaching large devices to the Combination Caps worn by its Officers and Chief Petty Officers, the Navy has taken a different approach than the Army and Air Force: Rather than inserting a pin through an eyelet and having the reinforced cap material hold the device, the insignia is instead attached to elastic mounting band that fits around the cap frame.
Because the Chief Petty Officer insignia is considerably smaller than the one worn by Officers and Chief Warrant Officers, the area of the band where the device is attached is also smaller in order to maintain the appropriate relationship in size between the black background and the insignia.
Currently, female Chief Petty Officers who are still wearing the Female Combination Cover will
need to pick up the mounting band for that particular hat, which is sometimes referred to as a bucket cover or bucket hat and is shaped entirely differently from the male Combination Cap. That changed with the wear of the Khaki bucket cover being discontinued in November 2019, while the White bucket cover was allowed to be worn until 1 January 2020.
