Female Officers in the ranks of Lieutenant Commander (O-4) and above may be prescribed to wear the Dinner Dress White Jacket Uniform (DDWJ) to official functions at which civilians would normally wear Black Tie clothing. Worn only during the Summer, it is an optional purchase for Lieutenants (O-3) and below, as well as all Warrant and Chief Warrant Officers (W-1 to W-5).
The Dinner Dress White Jacket worn by females is superficially similar to the jacket worn by males, but has a narrow shawl collar instead of the men’s semi-peaked lapels. It has three 22.5-ligne Navy eagle gilt buttons running down each side of the front, as opposed to the men’s pair of 35-ligne buttons on each side, and lacks the link-chain closure found on the men’s jacket.
Regulations list blue formal slacks as a basic DDWJ component, but Female Officers may choose to replace them with the blue formal skirt (floor-length) or blue unbelted skirt (the hem falls between 1.5 inches above or below the crease behind the knee). Similarly, the black service shoes may be replaced with black formal pumps or flats (specifications listed in Articles 3501.55 and 3501.56 of Navy Uniform Regulations).
