U.S. NAVY MASTER CPO OF THE NAVY COAT RANK DEVICE

Master Chief Petty Officers wear these metal grade insignia on the epaulets of the Black Relax Fit jacket and the single-breasted and double-breasted All Weather Coats (the single-breasted version is being phased out and will not be authorized after 30 September 2020).

The special rate and office of Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) was established in 1967 as the Senior Enlisted Advisor of the Navy. The design of the insignia of grade is based upon the original Chief Petty Officer insignia, but with three stars atop the fouled anchor to reflect that even though the MCPON is in the E-9 pay grade (which is represented by two stars), the MCPON is the most senior enlisted Sailor in the Navy. Appointed by and reporting to the Chief of Naval Operations, the MCPON also works with the Chief of Naval Personnel, and also confers with those Master Chief and Senior Chief Petty Officers who have been designated as Command Senior Enlisted Leaders (CSELs).
