U.S. NAVY UTILITIESMAN (UT) RATING BADGE

Like the other six source ratings for the Seabee Community, the Utilitiesman rating (UT) was established in 1948, drawing on Sailors serving in the Water Tender (Construction Battalion) service rating. (The Water Tender rating was included in the Boilerman rating when this change was made.) Four service ratings were established in the new Utilitiesman rating: Air Conditioning, Boilerman, Plumber, and Water and Sanitation. Those service ratings are long gone, but the tasks associated with them are still in the bailiwick of the UT rating.

You can get a good idea of the various duties performed by Sailors in the Utilitiesman rating if you combine the skills and expertise of an HVAC technician with those of workers serving the Utilities department of a municipality. Besides handing the maintenance and repair of Heating, Refrigeration, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning,  today’s UT Sailors also work on waste-water and sewage systems, water treatment facilities, fire hydrants and plumbing systems, laundry equipment, and compressed-air systems, to name a few. And their inclusion in the Seabee community means they also handle a wide array of tasks associated with underwater construction that aren’t typically conjured up by the “Utilitiesman” title: Remote Operated Vehicle, diving, demolition, salvage, oceanographic, and offloading operations are just a few of these.

Of course, as Seabees they’re also charged with the combat-oriented asks included in the Seabee Common Core duties. These include every aspect of establishing, constructing, and defending a base. Conducting embarkation/debarkation of men and materials, setting tactical defenses and conducting patrols, operating crew-served weapons, deploying mines and pyrotechnic devices, maintaining communications equipment, carrying out Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Explosive defenses, and repairing damage airfields are just some of the duties which Sailors in the Utilitiesman rating perform—and which make them so essential to many of the operations associated with the Global War on Terror.
