Sailors who have chosen the Aviation Electrician’s Mate (AE) rating for their career path will work as either an Intermediate Level Technician or an Organizational Level Technician. Shore duty for Intermediate Level Technicians will be at one of three Fleet Readiness Centers (Cherry Point, Jacksonville, and San Diego), while shipboard duty will be as a member of an Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department on an aircraft carrier, amphibious assault vessel, or other aircraft-capable ship. (Senior Chief Aviation Electrician’s Mates are primarily assigned billets in either rotary-wing or fixed-wing aircraft squadrons.)
Working in conjunction with Production Control and Quality Assurance work centers, and adhering to the guidelines set forth in the Maintenance Program, Intermediate Level Technicians are responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and troubleshooting of a multiplicity of equipment types. These include generators, power distribution equipment, electronic components, aircraft instruments, electronic module test consoles, inertial navigation units, and even night-vision goggles. The specific tasks handled by an AE working as an Intermediate Level Technician are divided into nine categories: Aircraft Electrical Systems, Aircraft Instruments, Aircraft Power Plant Electrical Systems, Automatic Flight Control Systems, Compass and Inertial Navigation Systems, Electrical Maintenance, Maintenance Administration, Power Generation and Distribution Systems, and Quality Assurance.
