After completing Recruit Training, sailors seeking the Aviation Electronics Technician (AT) rating will attend the Class “A” Technical School in Pensacola. Here, they will take part in AT Core classes, but will also follow an “I” (Intermediate Level) or “O” (Organizational Level) strand of classes. Near the completion of “A,” most ATs will be assigned to a Platform “C” School, with “Platform” referencing the type of aircraft they will be working on. For instance, ATs sent to the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Washington (state) will undergo training on the EA-6B Prowler (electronic warfare), P-3C (surveillance and antisubmarine), and EP-3E (signals reconnaissance).
Where the C-school education will be augmented with “on the job training” depends on the strand the AT is in. For Aviation Electronics Technicians in the Intermediate Level strand, early billet shore-based assignments will like be at one of the Navy’s Fleet Readiness Centers; six are located in the U.S. and one is in Atsugi, Japan. AT sailors headed for sea duty will billet on either an aircraft carrier or some other aircraft-capable vessel (LHA, LHD, LPH) where they will become members of the ship's Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department.
