For Navy enlistees considering a career in the Yeoman rating, the first step is to begin an apprenticeship in the General Rate of Seaman. Entering the Navy as Seaman Recruits at a paygrade of E1, up-and-coming Yeomen can reach Apprentice status and a paygrade of E2 following nine months of successful service, with advancement to the full-fledged Seaman status possible in another nine months.
Seaman who “strike” for the Yeoman rating must be U.S. citizens, eligible for security clearances, and have typing skills (a typing test will be required during training). Those who are accepted for Yeoman training will attend the Yeoman Class “A” School at the Naval Technical Training Center in Meridian, Mississippi. The Integrated Learning Environment allows students to learn at paces best-suited to their skills and talents using computer-aided instruction followed by hands-on application of principles and techniques.
Spanning seven weeks, the courses focus foundational skills that form the bedrock for the types of administrative work they will be performing upon deployment. Yeomen use computers for the vast majority of their tasks, so computer literacy, general keyboarding, and an introduction to common computer programs are a major part of the Class “A” training regimen.
Completion of “A” school is followed by deployment to fleet units or shore installations, where Yeomen will can begin to get more thoroughly acquainted with the numerous forms, procedures, and protocols demanded by each billet. Opportunities for advancement include earning NEC 2514 to become a Flag Writer (serving on the personal staff of Flag Officers and other senior officers) and NECs to become a Security Specialist (9556) and a Special Security Assistant (9190).
