Ensigns in the United States Navy and U.S. Coast Guard and Second Lieutenants in the United States Marine Corps wear a single gold bar as their insignia of grade, with the size varying based upon where it is to be worn. All three services use the same size insignia for wear on both the collar points of shirts and on their Garrison Caps, but only one insignia is worn on the Garrison Cap rather than a pair, placed on the wearer’s right side of the cap.
In the Navy and Coast Guard, the insignia is positioned one-and-a-half inches from the bottom of the cap and two inches from the front crease, while USMC regulations call for it to be placed so that the flap bisects the insignia and the insignia generally bisects the flap.
Navy and Coast Guard Ensigns wear a miniature Officer Cap Device, half the size of the one worn on the Combination Cap, on the wearer’s left side of the Garrison Cap; Marine Second Lieutenants wear the USMC’s Eagle, Globe, and Anchor insignia on the left side of the cap.
