The Summer White Uniform has been authorized for only Officers and Chief Petty Officers since 2010, the year the Navy introduced a year-round Service Uniform for Junior Enlisted personnel (E-6 and below in 2010) to replace the Winter Blue and Summer White Service Uniforms (another Service Uniform, Tropical White, had already been discontinued by this time).
When prescribed as the Uniform of the Day, the Summer White Uniform for Female Officers is worn during the Summer while performing office work or watchstanding duties, on liberty, or when conducting business ashore. Its distinctive white short-sleeved shirt, which replaced a long-sleeved version in 1975 (derided by nicknames such as the “Milkman” and “Good Humor” uniform), is worn with an open collar, and Officer rank and Line/Staff Corps affiliation is displayed on hard shoulder boards. Ribbons take place of medals on the Summer White Uniform, and our Military Awards Builder makes it simple to have them mounted according to regulations.
