The sleeve insignia for a Lieutenant (junior grade) in the Navy consists of two stipes, one a half-inch-wide and another a quarter-inch in width, with a space of a quarter-inch between the two. Our set contains a 30-inch roll of each width of the black lacing used for the stripes—more than enough lacing for the stripes that fully encircle the sleeve. The half-inch stripe is placed closest to the bottom of the sleeve (two ends from the cuff), and the quarter-inch stripe is placed a quarter-inch above it.
In addition to stripes as sleeve insignia, Navy Officers of the Line, Restricted and Unrestrcited, also wear a device above the top stripe, a five-pointed gold star with one ray pointing downward. (Unlike the Service Dress Blue uniform, Staff Corps officers did not wear their insignia or Corps identification on their sleeves, but instead displayed these with collar devices).
