Established in June 1958 with its first cadre of Sailors assuming their new responsibilities on November 16 of that same year, the rate of E-9, Master Chief Petty Officer (MCPO), is one of the most senior positions open to enlisted personnel in the United States Navy. This White Combination Cap was formerly designated as the Men’s Combination Cover, but a 2015 NAVADMIN designating it as a unisex cover means that Female MCPOs may also wear this cap (in fact, wear of either it or the Alternate Combination Cover is mandatory come 31 October 2018).
Cap insignia includes the two gold retaining buttons, emblazoned with the Navy Eagle, that secure the black chin strap and mounting band in place (interestingly, Navy regulations state that the chin strap is part of the Combination Cap insignia). But it is the MCPO cap device that naturally grabs your attention: the legendary fouled anchor and “USN” initials surmounted by two stars, one on each arm of the anchor positioned with a single ray pointing down.
Please note that we offer two versions of this cap device: the standard metal pin-on insignia, or an embroidered version made of silver and gold bullion sewn directly onto the mounting band. Although the embroidered version is not authorized for wear as part of a Navy uniform, its placement on the mounting band means it can be easily removed at any time replaced with the standard band and insignia. Response has been overwhelming for this one-of-a-kind item which makes an excellent gift or keepsake.
