The sleeve insignia for a Navy Rear Admiral (upper half) is the same as the “lower half” counterpart, but with one addition: a single half-inch stripe, reflective of its status of being one grade higher (O-8 as opposed to O-7). This designation was officially introduced in 1986.
This lacing set is for wear on the Aviation Working Green (AWG) Uniform, and contains one 30-inch roll of 2-inch-wide lacing and one roll of half-inch lacing; each roll provides more than enough material to sew a circular stripe onto both uniform sleeves. The 2-inch lacing is placed closest to the end of the sleeve (two inches from the cuff), and the half-inch lacing is sewn on one-fourth of an inch above the large stripe.
Rear Admirals (upper) who are Line Officers wear a five-pointed star sewn onto the sleeve a quarter-inch above the top stripe and centered by the front and rear creases of the sleeve. Visit our
Navy Sleeve Devices page to add a pair of the black stars with green trim to your shopping cart. Rear Admirals (upper) serving as Staff Officers do not wear any type of sleeve rank insignia or Corps device on the sleeves of the AWG; pin-on metal rank insignia is worn on the right collar and Staff Corps insignia on the left.
