Manufactured with Mil-Spec materials according to applicable Navy uniform regulations, our Senior Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Combination Cap for the Aviation Working Green (AWG) uniform ships ready to wear, with associated cap insignia installed. This includes the black chin strap, two gold retraining buttons (cap screws) embossed with the Navy Eagle, and the Senior CPO cap device featuring a single silver star mounted atop the fouled anchor associated with CPOs for over 100 years. The cap fabric is a 55/45 polywool blend, the same that’s used in USMC Service “A” uniforms and caps.
The Aviation Working Green was authorized as the Winter uniform for Navy Aviators in 1917, but was discontinued by the Navy in an effort to establish a more singular image across the various branches of the service. It was re-established in 1925, again as Navy Aviation’s winter uniform, with a Khaki authorized for the warmer summer months. The introduction of polyester-wool blends made the AWG a more attractive choice, and the Navy’s decision to allow the wear of the leather flight jacket and Garrison Cap with it also increased its popularity. The decision to discontinue wear of the AWG in 2010 was met with impassioned protests from those who viewed the AWG as a significant part of Navy tradition, but since that time there has never been any serious consideration at restoring the AWG’s authorized wear status.
