With the introduction of the Navy’s Information Dominance Corps in 2009 and its transformation to the Information Warfare Community (IWC) in 2016, enlisted Sailors in the Cryptologic Technician (CT) rating not only became eligible to earn the Enlisted Information Warfare Specialist qualification, but continue their careers in the IWC by applying for positions as Limited Duty Officers (LDOs) or Chief Warrant Officers (CWOs).

Falling into the Information Warfare (IW) and Cyber Warfare Engineer sub-community of the IWC, CT Sailors from all five service ratings-- CTI, CTM, CTN, CTR, and CTT—can apply to become either Information Warfare LDOs or Information Warfare Technician CWOs in the Cryptologic Warfare specialty community. Sailors pursuing the Limited Duty Officer pathway progressively advance within a fairly broad field of technical expertise, taking leadership and management positions at the Ensign to Captain Level that utilize their technical backgrounds and the skills they have acquired that simply aren’t available through normal office designations. Chief Warrant Officers, on the other hand, serve as commissioned officers who have been selected because their knowledge and experience allow them to direct operations within a highly specialized occupation. Like LDOs, CT Sailors from all five service ratings are eligible for selection to the CWO program

The Cyber Warfare Engineer specialty community, on the other hand, does not yet offer advancement via LDO entrance. What’s more, Sailors from only two service ratings—Cryptologic Technician Networks and Cryptologic Technician Collection—are eligible to be selected for advancement to the position of Cyber Warfare Warrant Officer CWO.
