The United States Navy and Coast Guard use the same insignia for Chief Warrant Officers in grades 2 through 4 (both services discontinued the Warrant Officer 1 grade and the Coast Guard has not implemented the CWO5 grade). For cap rank insignia for these three grades, this consists of one or two gold or silver bars, with silver always indicating a higher grade than gold and two bars outranking one. The Chief Warrant Officer 2’s insignia of two bars of gold on a blue background thus outranks a single gold bar (once used for Warrant Officer 1) and is outranked by a single silver bar.
CWO2 cap rank insignia is worn on the wearer’s right side, with the bar oriented vertically and its center located two inches from the cap’s front crease and an inch-and-a-half from the bottom of the cap. In both the Navy and Coast Guard, Officer cap devices are similarly placed on the wearer’s left side of the cap.
