Air Force uniform regulations prescribe embroidered Master Sergeant rank insignia for wear on the Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) utility uniform and the Airman Battle Uniform (ABU), as well as on a variety of specialized outwear garments and ensembles such as the All-Purpose Environmental Clothing System and the Extended Cold Weather Clothing System.
Officially authorized for wear on 1 October 2018, the OCP moved the placement of rank insignia to the chest rather than on the shoulders of Enlisted Airmen and on the collars of the ABU coat for Officers. Because the design of the sew-on ABU Master Sergeant rank insignia is so close to the one used for Service and Mess Dress uniforms, we feature it on our
USAF Chevrons page. The Air Force is in the process of phasing out the ABU and has assigned 1 April 2021 as the mandatory possession date for the OCP.
More E-7 Master Sergeant Insignia and DevicesRank insignias for both patterns are manufactured with one of three attachment methods which you can specify using the selection box to the right. Both hook and loop (Rank with Velcro) and sew-on insignias are authorized for the OCP coat with the caveat that the nametape and USAF tape also worn on the front of the coat are both attached using the same method as rank insignia. Hook and loop (Velcro) insignia are worn on the ABU coat, as well as on the Sage Green or Coyote Brown fleece jackets. Slip-on insignia slide over rank tabs on the Woodland Gore-Tex Jacket and Improved Rain Suit.
For your convenience, we’ve included a detailed uniform chart that lists the Pattern and Style option(s) or the different uniforms and garments.
