Use the Style and Pattern selection boxes to the right to specify the appropriate subdued cloth E-8 Senior Master Sergeant insignia for the ABU and OCP utility uniforms and other Air Force clothing ensembles such as the All-Purpose Environmental Clothing System and the Extended Cold Weather Clothing System. The sole exception is the sew-on cloth Senior Master Sergeant insignia for the ABU coat which is located on our
USAF Chevrons page.
The Style selection box refers to the manner in which insignia is attached to the uniform. Sew-on is self-explanatory, while “Velcro with Rank” refers to insignia that is attached via a hook and loop backing, commonly referred to by the trade name Velcro. “Gortex loop” refers to the tube-shaped insignias designed to slide over rank tabs found on outerwear garments like the Improved Rain Suit.
More E-8 Senior Master Sergeant Insignia and DevicesThe Pattern selection box is also self-explanatory. Officially introduced for wear by all Air Force personnel in October 2018, the OCP (Operational Camouflage Pattern) utility uniform will eventually replace all ABUs, which will no longer be authorized for wear after 1 April 2021. Interestingly, the ABU was officially mandated for wear for less than a decade: it was not a mandatory uniform until 1 November 2011.
Use this reference chart if you’re unsure what type of insignia is authorized for your uniform or garment.
