Air Force 1st Lieutenants wear embroidered insignia with subdued rank on the Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) utility uniform, the Airman Battle Uniform (ABU), and outerwear clothing systems and garments like the All-Purpose Environmental Clothing System and Extended Cold Weather Clothing System (ECWCS), and the Woodland Gore-Tex Jacket. As you can see in the “Style” selection box to the right, different attachment methods are employed on these uniforms: Sew-on, Velcro (“Rank with Velcro”), and slip-on (“Gortex Loop”).
Officially introduced in October 2018, the OCP is the replacement uniform for the ABU and carries a mandatory possession date of 1 April 2021. In addition to a different camouflage pattern, the OCP insignia system features a different color scheme for ranks (although the 1st Lieutenant insignia is black on both OCP and ABU insignias) and moves the placement of 1st Lieutenant rank insignia from coat collars on the ABU to the chest of the OCP coat. Officers may choose between either sew-on or Velcro-backed insignia for wear on the OCP coat, but it must match the style attachment method of the nametape and USAF tape.
