Air Force regulations call for the wear of subdued cloth rank insignia on uniforms like the Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) and Airman Battle Uniform (ABU) and specialized ensemble uniforms like the All-Purpose Environmental Clothing System (APECS).
In addition to conforming to the two camouflage patterns employed by the OCP and ABU, subdued insignias also come with different attachment methods that are reflected in the “Style” drop-down selector to the right. Sew-on is self-explanatory; “Rank with Velcro” is insignia attached with a hook-and-loop/hook-and-pile system, known best by the trademarked name Velcro; and “Gortex Loop” refers to a tubular design in which the insignia slides over a rank tab on the uniform.
Choose an appropriate subdued cloth rank insignia by selecting the camouflage pattern and then the attachment method. Note that the dark blue subdued ABU insignia are embroidered on a solid-colored background rather than a swatch of material featuring the ABU camo pattern. Use the chart below for guidance in making your selections and consult AFI 36-2903 for instructions on placement.
