Subdued cloth rank insignia is worn on the Opera-tional Camouflage Pattern (OCP) utility uniform and the Airman Battle Uniform, which the Air Force has slated to be phased out completely by 1 April 2021. The two utility uniforms’ distinct camouflage patterns are reflected in the design of subdued rank insignia worn on them, with the dark blue two stars used for the Major General rank on ABU uniforms and spice brown stars on the OCP rank insignia.
Camouflage pattern is not the only area of difference between the two utility uniforms. For the OCP, regulations call for Officers and Enlisted Airmen alike to wear rank insignia on the chest of the OCP coat. In contrast, Officers wear rank insignia on the collars of the ABU coat and Enlisted sew chevrons onto each shoulder midway between the shoulder and elbow.
Other uniforms on which subdued cloth rank insignia are worn include the APECS, or All-Purpose Environmental Clothing System, and the ECWCS (Extended Cold Weather Clothing System) and one of its components, the Sage Green fleece. In some cases, such as with the Sage Green fleece, the subdued rank insignia is embroidered on a solid-color background rather than a background with a camouflage pattern.
