The United States Air Force Air Education and Training Command (AETC) unit crest is authorized for wear on the ascot worn with the Air Force Security Forces dress uniform or the Airman's Battle Uniform. Prior to the establishment to the 1997 establishment of Security Forces, Security Police (SP) were authorized to wear the crest of Major Commands such as AETC on the blue beret that was officially introduced for SP personnel in 1976; after 1997, Security Forces wear their own crest or colored flash on the blue beret.
Part of a major reorganization of the Air Force, Air Force Education and Training Command was created in 1993 through the merger of Air Training Command and Air University and the transfer of men, equipment, and facilities from ATC to the new AETC. Headquartered at Randolph Air Force Base at Joint Base San Antonio, the AETC comprises nearly 50,000 Air Force personnel (active-duty and Reserve) and some 14,000 civilian employees, with around 1,600 aircraft at its disposal for training pilots and aircrew for both fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft.
Following the merger with Air Training Command, Air University was made subordinate organization of AETC and is responsible for Officer accessions (except for those from the U.S. Air Force Academy) and runs the service’s Professional Military Education program. It also oversees the Air Force Junior ROTC program, a valuable source for future Air Force Officers.
