Designed to slide over the epaulets of shirts, blouses, sweaters, and the topcoat of Air Force Officers and NCOs, shoulder marks are available in two sizes with two types of material used for crafting the insignia of grade. (Note: sometimes shoulder marks are mistakenly referred to as "epaulets.")
A small size is recommended for Officers with smaller shoulders so that the shoulder mark is held snugly in place when the epaulet is buttoned, while the large shoulder marks are a good choice both for average or larger size individuals or for garments with larger shoulder areas such as the topcoat. Use the selection box to the right to choose the size that best suits your body shape or garment.
You may also choose between rank insignia that has been embroidered with silver material or crafted from silver bullion. While both create a professional appearance, the bullion’s “throwback” look is sought after by many Air Force Officers for its unique presentation.
Shoulder marks for Captain (O-3) and lower Air Force Officers are unadorned with additional ornamentation, while Field-Grade (O-4 to O-6) shoulder marks feature a single silver braid on one end. General Officers (O-7 and above) wear shoulder marks with a braid on each end, with a wider braid on the shoulder end.
