Chief Master Sergeants (E-9) serving in the duty position of First Sergeant may wear their insignia of grade on shoulder marks attached to the epaulets of the polywool pullover sweater and the white or blue cardigan sweaters. (Note: White cardigans may be worn only with the Maternity Jumper). The duty position of First Sergeant is as old as the Air Force itself, with the distinctive identifying lozenge (diamond) added to insignias in 1947.
First Sergeants report directly to the Commanding Officer and serve as liaison between the Command and the enlisted cadre. Originally limited to the grade of E-7, the First Sergeant duty position was added to grades E-8 and E-9, with First Sergeants in those grades being assigned to larger units under the echelon of Wings, Field Operating Agencies, Numbered Air Forces, and Major Commands; these are assigned a Command Chief Master Sergeant to perform First Sergeant duties.
