In the United States Air Force, Field-Grade and General Officers are authorized to wear “clouds and darts” ornamentation on the visor of the Service Cap, with General Officers wearing three on each side of the visor and Field-Grade Officers wearing two.
For the position of Air Force Chief of Staff, however, clouds-and-darts emblems are also worn on the hat band of the Service Cap, signifying the wearer as the most senior and highest ranking officer in the Air Force. The hat band has a total of ten clouds-and-dart symbols that encompass the entire cap, with the hat band positioned so that there Officer’s Service Cap insignia is approximately centered between two of the symbols.
Wear of this unique hat band is also authorized for Air Force Generals who have been chosen to serve as Chairman or Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
