Both the designation and chevron design of the E-6 Technical Sergeant rank insignia has remained unchanged since the United States Air Force developed its own stripe designs in 1948 (made available in 1949). Promotion from Staff Sergeant to Technical Sergeant is a highly competitive affair, with successful candidates spending over four years time-in-grade on average. In recent years, additional requirements for Professional Military Education—part of the Department of Defense’s emphasis on helping NCOs assume greater leadership roles—has made it even more challenging to reach the E-6 pay grade.
We offer embroidered cloth Technical Sergeant chevrons comes in two sizes, Large and Small, and two styles, ABU and Dress Blue. “Dress Blue” is somewhat misleading—these white chevrons are worn on a wide variety of uniforms, shirts, and coats. ABU, on the other hand, couldn’t be more specific: these subdued insignia are worn only on the Airman Battle Uniform, which is slated to be phased out of use by 1 April 2021. Its replacement, the OCP utility uniform, went on sale officially on 1 October 2018.
More E-6 Technical Sergeant Insignia and DevicesThe insignia is centered on the outer arm halfway between the shoulder seam and the elbow bend of long-sleeve garments or between the shoulder seam and the bottom of the sleeve on short-sleeve shirts and blouses.
Use the drop-down selector to choose the appropriate size insignia. Men’s uniforms generally call for the Large (4”) chevrons, but the Small (3.5”) is worn on Men’s Long- and Short-Sleeved Shirts. Air Force regulations offer women Airmen the choice of either Large or Small chevrons except for Maternity Dress variations which require the Small size, as does the Long- and Short-Sleeved Blouses.
The Large insignia is mandated for the Chef’s coat and the Ceremonial Band Tunic.
