The Air Force Honor Guard is one of several organizations whose members are authorized to wear a special ceremonial uniform; other groups include Arlington National Cemetery Chaplains, Base Honor Guards, Color Guards, Drill Teams, Military Funeral Details, and United States Air Force Bands (USAF Band, USAF Academy Band, USAF Regional Bands).
The Officer Honor Guard Uniform is loosely based upon the basic design of the Officer Service Dress Uniform. Like the Service Dress Coat, for example, the Honor Guard Uniform coat is single-breasted with three buttons, notched lapels, epaulets, one welt pocket on the upper left, and two lower pocket flaps. But the Honor Guard Coat has a double vent in the rear instead of the single vent on the Service Dress Coat, 3/4-inch-wide silver sleeve braids as opposed to the half-inch-wide blue braid used on the Officer’s Service Coat, chrome “Hap Arnold” buttons instead of oxidized silver, and 1/8-inch sewn creases (there are none on the Service coat).
Other unique features of the Honor Guard Uniform include silver braid and sewn creases on the Trousers, specialized Service Cap, silver aiguillette, heel cheaters (to enhance heel clicks used to coordinate Honor Guard maneuvers), and of course various Honor Guard insignia.
