Five crossed golden trumpets serve as insignia for the duty position of Fire Chief in the United States Air Force’s Fire Emergency Services. Military personnel in the FES wear a Fire Protection badge embossed with the five-trumpet insignia, while civilian FES personnel wear it in the form of a cloth path collar insignia or as a shoulder mark (soft shoulder board).
While five trumpets is an almost universal insignia for Fire Chief or heads of Fire Departments, the golden wreaths on these shoulder marks are not typically found on civilian firefighter insignias, nor are they mandated by any Air Force or FES uniform regulations. Instead, Installation Fire Chiefs are granted the authority to approve different designs of insignias for different duty positions; the Lead Firefighter insignia at one installation may comprise two parallel trumpets, while another installation might use an image of crossed trumpets.
