Four crossed gold trumpets is the insignia of Deputy Fire Chiefs in the United States Air Force’s Fire Emergency Services (FES). For military FES personnel, the insignia is found on the Fire Protection badge; civilian personnel, on the other hand, display it on a cloth patch collar insignia or on shoulder marks. Either the collar insignia or shoulder marks are required on all uniform shirts worn by civilian FES personnel.
Because individual Installation Fire Chiefs have authority to approve insignia designs for duty positions, the use gold wreaths as on these shoulder marks is not standard across the entire Air Force.
Deputy Fire Chief is a duty position rather than a rank or grade, but typically Airmen must reach the rank Senior Master Sergeant (E-8) or Chief Master Sergeant (E-9) before they are assigned to the position. Deputy Fire Chiefs also must have completed the same FES Certification Programs—Fire Officer IV, Fire Instructor II, Fire Inspector II, Hazmat Incident Commander, Incident Safety Officers, and ICS 300/400—as required for the duty position of Fire Chief.
