Rank and duty positions in the United States Air Force's Fire Emergency Services (FES) are indicated by the number and color of trumpets on their collar insignia or shoulder marks (soft shoulder boards). All personnel must wear collar insignia or cloth shoulder marks on all uniform shirts.
Duty position insignia were previously specified in Air Force Instruction 32-3006, Uniform and Grooming Standards for Civilian Fire Emergency Personnel, but that instruction is obsolete and the final decision regarding insignia designs for the different duty positions is up to the Installation Fire Chief. (Interestingly, the configuration of two crossed silver trumpets was not even listed in AFI 32-2006.)
Because gold-colored trumpets are still reserved for various level of FES chiefs, a pair of crossed silver trumpets would likely be used for positions such as Lead Firefighter or Fire Inspector. Other possibilities include Supervisor/Dispatcher or Hazardous Materials Team Member.
