When wearing white Dress or Service uniforms, Coast Guard Rear Admirals (upper half) display their rank of insignia on Hard shoulder boards. The Read Admiral (upper half) shoulder board consists of a 1-1/2-inch gold lace braid with an embroidered silver fouled anchor (the fluke with the overlapped chain points to wearer’s front) and two gold stars centered proportionally between the board’s outer edge and a snap-button, all set upon a board covered in blue fabric.
The board’s underside has a hasp that is opened and inserted through shoulder loops and is secured with the button. Hard shoulder boards are also authored for wear on Bridge Coats that have shoulder loops, as well as on legacy Reefer Coats that are still serviceable. Hard boards are authorized in Large (regular) and Small (3/4-scale) versions that may be worn by both male and female Officers and Chief Warrant Officers.
For more functional uniforms, Rear Admirals (upper half) wear Enhanced shoulder boards, which ae also offered in Large and Small sizes. Enhanced boards are designed for uniforms with epaulettes, which slide through the open-ended elastic material on the bottom of the board, and are most commonly worn on the Light Blue shirt (short- and long-sleeve versions), but are also permitted on the Wooly-Pully and Cardigan sweaters and on Bridge coats manufactured with epaulettes rather than shoulder loops.
