Manufactured in a Large and a Small size for men and women Marines respectively, sew-on Sergeant rank insignia come with either gold or green chevrons (stripes) on a red or khaki background. Gold chevrons on a red background are worn on the coat of the Blue Dress “A/B” uniform; green stripes with red backing are for the coat of the Service “A” uniform; and Green stripes set against khaki are worn exclusively on the long- and short-sleeve khaki shirt worn with Dress and Service uniforms.
Regardless of the uniform or garment, sew-on Sergeant chevrons are attached to both sleeves using a straight machine stitch with thread that matches the color of the chevrons’ background material. On both the Dress and Service coats and on the long-sleeve khaki shirt, the insignia is centered horizontally, point up, and positioned so that the tip of the top chevron is four inches from the shoulder seam. The same orientation is used when attaching the Sergeant chevron to a short-sleeve khaki shirt, but vertical positioning differs—the insignia is centered between the seam and bottom of the sleeve on men’s shirts and between the shoulder seam and the peak of the shirt cuff on women’s shirts.
