The close working relationship between Sergeants Major (E-9) and Marine Corps Commanders is reflected in the star located between the four rockers and three chevrons of the rank insignia. Sergeants Major wear sew-on rank insignia on the sleeves of the Dress and Service coats, the Evening Dress jacket, and khaki shirts (short- and long-sleeve).
Use the two selection boxes to the right to specify the Size and Finish of the insignia appropriate for your uniform. The size option is self-explanatory.
Uniform | Finish |
Blue/Blue-White Dress Coat | Gold on Red |
Service "A" Coat | Green on Red |
Khaki Shirts | Green on Khaki |
SNCO Evening Dress | SNCO |
When sewing insignia on coat/jacket or shirt sleeves, center it horizontally on the outer half of the sleeve. For vertical positioning, place the insignia so its top is three inches from the shoulder seam on coats/jackets and the long-sleeve khaki shirt.
On the women’s short-sleeve khaki shirt, the chevrons are centered between the shoulder seam and peak of the cuff stitching. For the men’s short-sleeve khaki shirt, use the shoulder seam and the bottom of the sleeve when vertically centering the insignia.
