Marine Corps regulations specify gold-plated or black metal (or plastic) Corporal rank insignia for wear on a variety of uniforms, the vast majority of which are non-dress. Gold-plated Corporal chevrons are worn only on the Blue Dress Sweater, first introduced in 1992 and an optional wear item with the Blue Dress “C” uniform variation. Allowed for wear as part of the duty uniform both and off a military installation and while commuting to and from work, the Blue Dress Sweater may be worn as the uniform of the day and on leave and liberty, but is prohibited for wear during inspections, parades, and ceremonial formations.
Black pin-on Corporal insignia are worn the collars of coats (Utility, All-Weather, Maternity Work Uniform) and organizational clothing items (food services uniforms, coveralls, etc.) by placing them point-up on each collar so the center of the insignia is on a line that bisects the angle of the collar point. Move the insignia along imaginary bisecting line until the two lower outside edges of the insignia are 1/2-inch from both sides of the collar.
Black pin-on Corporal chevrons are also worn on the epaulettes of the Tanker Jacket and the Green Service sweater. Here, they are placed so that the bottom of the insignia is 3/4-inch from the shoulder seam and they are centered between the front and back edges of the epaulette. Note that the same rules are used for positioning the gold-metal Corporal rank insignia on the Blue Dress Sweater.
